Will Government getting tough on ‘P’ help with other addictions?

October 9, 2009

Yesterday the Prime Minster John Key announced the Government’s multi-pronged plan to tackle the problems that “P” has caused in our communities.

Addiction treatment services have a long history within the community sector and provide us with examples of the first “peer support” and “recovery” models that have shaped the current mental health environment.

Over the years inadequate funding has lead to the loss of residential treatment beds so yesterday’s announcement to increase funding in this area has been welcomed by Platform members that provide addiction treatment and support services. (more…)

Employment Agency closes its doors

September 23, 2009

Temp Solutions began 6 years ago in response to the need for consumer participation as described in the NZ Mental Health Sector Standard 9 –

consumers are involved in the planning, implementation and evaluation at every level of the mental health service to ensure services are responsive to the needs of individuals

Kites, a community development agency that exists to incubate ideas that can become active social change, hosted Temp Solutions as they looked at ways to make consumer participation into a sustainable social business.

Temp Solutions used this as an opportunity to create a specialist temping agency, that could offer people recovering from mental illness, a different way to engage in the workforce. With start up funding from the Ministry of Social Development they were given the challenge of becoming financially self sufficient.

Sustainability in the current environment is a big ask for small innovative programmes. As the recession has impacted on employment and the focus of the Government shifts back to the ‘newly unemployed’ Temp Solutions is closing its door this week.

Manager Leo McIntyre says there have been some major achievements.

“Winning a gold award Australian and New Zealand Mental Health Service Achievement Awards in 2007 was important but knowing that people who used Temp Solutions have had a positive experience and many now have jobs in the mental heath sector, has been our greatest success.”

Temp Solutions’ story is one of our time as it demonstrates the paradox of the call for innovation in mental health in an environment where commercial success is also required.

Thanks to Temp Solutions and to Kites for giving life to a bold idea.

It’s about relationships

September 5, 2009

When a local community group said they were unable to provide peer support staff to the Henry Rongomai Bennett centre at Waikato Hospital, Kelly Ware the senior consumer relationship advisor took action.

Kelly says “Peer support is so important; people who are unwell need someone to talk to who has an understanding of mental illness and can also role model recovery”.

So using the consumer advisory role, Kelly was able to put people with specific experience into the wards, this meant that someone who had used the forensic services was able to work in the forensic ward, a young person with youth services etc.

The service users took to the peer workers and invited them back, they opened up about issues that felt they couldn’t talk to staff about including really personal issues about things such as the side effects of medication for young men.

Within 3 to 4 months there were peer workers in forensic, older person’s services and the adult acute wards. Staff, team leaders, and mangers were hearing such positive feedback and feeling proud about the work that it was being called “peer support work” instead of “advocacy”.

More support is needed than can be provided by the current funds and the programme is hopeful that such an exciting and innovation will be funded and two posts can be created to continue this valuable service.
