whilst appreciating the advantage's of coming under the umbrella of socialwork we also need to be cognizant of the potential cost's for support workers ie registration and affiliation fees that on a support work wage can have a significant impact on the take home pay.
Another factor to be thoughtful of is that of a reduction of status of support workers ie as in the various profession's that sit under the N.Z.N.O registration ie Specialist Nurse,Degree Nurse,Comprehensive Nurse,Enrolled Nurse and Nursing Assistant.
I believe that registration could certainly be a step forward for support workers but before that happens there needs to be some open and frank discussion on the advantages and disadvantages of the move and not just looked upon as the goose that laid the golden egg .

Thank-goodness staff will finally start to be acknowledged properly for the work they do!
On the issue of what seems to be a lean back towards re-institutionalisation, what government staff seem to forget is they could easily, within the blink of an eye, become one of these 'disabled people.' Would their so-called solution be so appealing then?

Considering the eagerness shown by this government to accomodate business, company and council requests for intervention by legislation I don't have any doubt that National will have this problem assigned to the back burner and resulting workers entitlements in the dustbin and goneburger by lunchtime the day after the court decision comes out.
While support services are vital to the nation so too are the rights of workers to a fair renumeration for their work, even if they are "sleeping" while helping residents to the toilet and making sure everyone is secure during their residential sleepover.
If such a policy results in a worker shortage I'm sure that the government could also legislate to import highly qualified workers from overseas. (yeah right).

Whanau Ora is an approach that many of our organisations have taken over the years - its all that unpaid work, connecting with each other logically on a needs basis on behalf of our families & whanaus.
Its good to see the concept formalised and although there are lots of questions, the 20 pilot sites will answer these after time.
I hope its a concept & approach that is eventually available for all families in our country.
